Job Description
Job Description

The role:
You'll be joining a team of passionate, experienced, full-stack engineers responsible all of Howcast's products: our consumer video site, the #1 mobile app for instructional content, and the suite of internal products that allow us to produce high-quality content at scale. In 2013, we'll be developing a new iOS app, several brand-new internal products, and an ongoing stream of A/B tests to continuously enhance our site. Whether you’re interested in high-traffic, consumer-facing sites or the meaty back-end infrastructure, we’ve got challenges you'll love to work on. Regardless of what you’re working on, you’ll always be deeply involved in the decisions that shape all our products and you'll collaborate with our data scientist, producers, marketing team, designer and product manager throughout the week.

The team:
Howcast’s engineering team practices non-dogmatic agile development. We have weekly sprints, pair program, and usually release on a weekly basis. But we value being nimble and flexible over ritual adherence to process; sometimes pairing isn’t the best approach, and sometimes it’s best to release every other week. We keep our work schedules sustainable, so that we’re always fresh as daisies, and ready and able to make smart decisions. We also take having fun in the office very seriously.

Skills & Requirements

What we’re looking for:

Experience with at least one production-level, high-traffic web application
Rails experience, preferably Rails 3
Experience with the latest front-end technologies, such as Haml, SCSS, and JavaScript and/or CoffeeScript.
Understanding of scaling techniques such as caching, database query optimization, and asynchronous/background job queues
Testing first, BDD/TDD. Mega points for RSpec

Bonus points for:

Writing a cross-domain JavaScript application
Deep knowledge of HTTP (e.g., when to use what response codes, how cache headers work, etc.)
Experience with MongoDB or any other NoSQL database.
App deployment to the cloud (Amazon, Rackspace, Heroku, etc.)
Knowledge of a non-Rails Ruby web framework, especially Sinatra
Extensive experience with *nix
