How will you pass your time with us?
Translating business problems into an abstract mathematical framework
Solving merchandising problems relating to personalization, discovery and search.
Extracting relevant insights from billions of points of data to improve performance.
An example problem — How do we choose a small, relevant & diverse set of products from our partner’s extensive catalog to present to each user to maximize conversion? (in half a second or less each time….)

What have you done?
MS/PhD degree in Statistics, Mathematics, OR, CS, Econometrics or …. surprise us
3+ year’s experience with building scalable recommendation systems using machine learning techniques with sparse/large datasets (bonus points for havingworked on machine learned ranking problems)
What are you good at?
A master of data mining/statistical learning techniques… . The usual suspects ….multivariate regression, Logit, SVM, Bagging, Boosting, Decision Trees, clustering. A grounding in their foundations doesn’t hurt (probability/linear algebra/optimization)
You have strong communication skills: you tell a clear/concise story with data.
You can translate business objectives into actionable analyses in your sleep
What’s the top 7 list of intangible/soft stuff we’re looking for?
A driven, self-starter with a bias towards action. You’re tenacious & industrious.
Comfortable in a fluid organization, changing requirements, rapid iterations, and minimal process/documentation.
You move seamlessly between code-analytical concepts & between human-machine
You’re known as a creative, innovative, & out-of-the-box thinker. You see patterns where others see inscrutable noise.
You can argue all sides of a debate convincingly, even if you harbor a preference.
You have been told that you are brilliant, even if you disagree.
You have a passion for anything data…and love to find the hidden truths in data
What technical stuff do you know?
At least one statistical analysis tool: R, SAS, SPlus, SPSS, Matlab
Common data structures and can write efficient code in Java and Python
How to query relational databases and pull data from various sources.
Query languages like Hive/Pig/Sawzall and/or general Map-Reduce computing
Cloud computing platforms |
